Get DAT Updates

Get DAT Updates compares your currently installed virus DAT file against the latest on NAI's FTP server. If there is an updated version, the file may be downloaded and installed. This program started out as a shell script, then morphed into an AppleScript but has now evolved into an AppleScript Studio application. It is free and open source. You may download either the application itself or the entire project including the source code.

Update: February 7, 2003: With the release of Virex 7.2 (for .Mac members) with it's eUpdate feature, there is no longer a need for Get DAT Updates. If you're still running Virex 7.1, then this program may still be of use to you.

Thanks to my good friend Jim for wanting a simple double-clickable application to do this. Inspiration goes a long way.

System Requirements

You must have NAI's Virex version 7.1 (it comes free with a .Mac account) along with Mac OS X 10.2 or higher. You must also have an active Internet connection in order for the FTP transfers to work. To complete the installation of new DAT files, administrative privilege is required.

Usage

Double-click on the application icon. You will see the following dialog window:

Click on the Check Now button. The program will compare the currently installed DAT version with the latest one on NAI's FTP server. If you are running the latest, you will see a dialog like this:

Simply click on the Quit button to exit the application. If there is a newer version on NAI's FTP server, you will see a dialog like this:

Click on the Install Now button to start the download and installation process. While the download takes place, the "barber pole" will spin.

Once the new DAT file has been downloaded and extracted, the program will prompted for the administrative password.

Enter the password and click on OK. Once the new DAT files have been installed, the dialog will look like this:

Click the Quit button to exit. That's all there is to it. If you have any questions or issues, feel free to e-mail me at:
